Tireless fighter for the oppressed and poor, citizen of the world, globe-trotting anti-globalization activist, Arundhati Roy has a long article in Outlook where she tells us why Afzal Guru’s life should not become extinct. I will not advise you to read the whole piece, unless you have a lot of time to kill, but some parts are most interesting.
Introduction:
On December 13 2001, the Indian Parliament was in its winter session. (The NDA government was under attack for yet another corruption scandal.) (italics mine)
If you are wondering how NDA government being under attack for corruption has any bearing on Afzal Guru case, please move to the conclusion:
If Afzal is hanged, we’ll never know the answer to the real question: Who attacked the Indian Parliament? Was it the Lashkar-e-Toiba? The Jaish-e-Mohammed? Or does the answer lie somewhere deep in the secret heart of this country that we all live in and love and hate in our own beautiful, intricate, various, and thorny ways?(italics mine)
I thought Ms Roy does not believe in the concept of nation states but we shall let it pass for the moment. Now, you know what the ‘’secret heart” of the country is? Of course, remember, NDA government was under attack for corruption when the attack on Parliament took place. So, tying two and two together, we reach the inevitable conclusion that messers Vajpayee and Advani orchestrated the attack on Parliament to save their own skin. Of course, one could point out that governments in this country are perpetually under attack in Parliament, or one could say if Guru is so innocent how will keeping him alive solve the mystery? But then we are arguing with Ms. Roy here. Logic, what logic?
Wonderful! Though, I cant help but wonder, why can’t the fearless warrier say it in so many words? Why this beating around the bush?
