Supreme Court judges should not use such language
While anger against terrorism is understandable, those who hold high constitutional posts should always seek to uphold the dignity of their office. From that perspective, Justice Pasayat’s denunciation of terrorists as animals is an unfortunate and inappropriate choice of words.
Besides, Justice Pasayat is quite wrong. Now, it is quite possible to question the rhetoric and sometimes even motives of organizations ostensibly devoted to advancement of human rights. But disagreement with methods should not translate into disdain for human rights. While loss of some degree of civil liberties is an inevitable offshoot of the battle against terrorism, it would be a pyrrhic victory if secured via turning India into a police state.
That would mean respecting the human rights of terrorists too–yes, including Kasab–however unsavory the task it may appear. It is not really about them but about us.
The Chief Justice of India, K.G Balakrishan had strongly advocated upholding the rule of law in case of Kasab. Justice Pasayat would do well to follow his example.
