Some further illumination in the comment thread. Quite a few commenters have stated something on these lines:

They also know that they will not find forgiveness in the party. Like all communist parties, at the top level cpim is medieval. So these are desperate men fighting for their lives.&quot;

This would explain the ferocious violence from both sides and could be the basis fpr the repugnant &quot;payback in their coin&quot;.
